Things Don’t Always Go As Planned; Sometimes Life Comes With a Hiccup

Last October I unveiled my new website with plans to roll out a campaign for my coaching services.

Two weeks later, I landed in the hospital for ten days and then went to rehab for almost five weeks. Luckily, I was home before the holidays, so I was able to celebrate and adjust. During that time, I occasionally stared into space wondering, as David Byrne would say, " How did I get here? ”. Other times I thought about the actions I needed to take to get back on track. As January heads to a close, I realized if not now, when?

Not so fast, before I move forward I have a couple of things to share.

  • The silver lining of my medical adventure was the waves of love and generosity that came my way from all corners of my life.

  •  I remembered how much I loved coaching, and that I missed my clients and could not wait to start again.

Is there anything that you have faced that you need to acknowledge before you are able to take the next step?

I have been a coach for almost ten years, the first half of my journey overlapping with my career as a speaker agent and executive. Then companies were sold, my position changed and then my job was eliminated.

So, I started again, announcing my coaching business on social media, only to have New York City and then the country close down a few days later due to Covid.

Talk about a roller coaster.

So we start, we pause, we move forward, we stop and then we start again.

One of the realizations that emerged since I returned home is how much I love working with speakers

I love supporting authors as they go from the page to the stage.

I love encouraging scholars to put away their PowerPoints.

For professionals, I love inviting people from different backgrounds to explore their lives to unearth the lessons of their experiences, so they can turn them into motivational talks.

Every individual is different, so I utilize my Intellectual Architecture process to help them to uncover the uniqueness of their message.

It is both a joy and challenge to discover what each person needs to get them to their next step, to navigate the twists and turns, and keep them on track to achieve their goals.

One of things I encourage my clients to do is to take ownership of their ideas and experiences and any testimonials they have received; to stand in their light and shine it outward.

I believe we can all benefit from this practice. So to get the ball rolling, here are a few of the testimonials that have been given to me for my work with speakers:

“When I was booked for one of the largest keynote speeches of my career, I knew just the person I would call. Helen's help was invaluable. I trust her judgment completely- she is a seasoned professional who is able to read and advise both on content of your speech and the emotional experiences it inspires in others.”

- Sue Varma MD, author Practical Optimism: The Art, Science, and Practice of Exceptional Well-Being

"She's a passionate advocate for her clients, their hearts and their minds. That means she's nurturing when she needs to be and direct when she needs to be. And she's fearless in both. Anyone who gets the privilege of working with Helen will no doubt benefit as I and so many others have.”

- Bruce Feiler, Author, Life in the Transitions

"Helen Churko is a remarkably accomplished Speaker Coach. She’s fiercely smart, highly intuitive, exceedingly well versed in the complex details of business issues, and stunningly creative with her appraisals and advice. Helen has made major contributions to my business success.”

- Dr. Helen Fisher, Neuroscientist & TED All Star
